I didn’t feel like mowing the lawn yesterday, so I went out and bought a new guitar.

My seventh Gretsch and my fourth 12-string, but my very first official Electromatic!

A few of you guys might remember from earlier posts that I’ve been considering this since last November, but what made me pull the trigger yesterday … anybody’s guess. Just seemed like the right time to do it. I left the house determined to bring one home, and three shops later I did.

Seems to be a pretty well made guitar, my only complaint was that the pickguard was rubbing against the treble pickup, making a weird scratching sound if you rested your right-hand pinky on it. Some very minor filing on the pickguard’s edge fixed that. Took all of ten minutes. Otherwise, everything’s A-OK. The new FT-5E pickups seem a little less twangy than your average classic Filtertron, but clear as a bell. They ring out very nicely, which is certainly something you like hear with a 12-string. I wasn’t necessarily looking for twang on this one anyway, it’s got a nice natural tone I think I’m going to really like.

So here it is, alone and with its new “twelver family” …

They are the best 12 string electrics out there.

Nice, guitar. Love Grestch's and 12-strings, but only have had Rickenbackers. Noticed your 350. How do you compare the two? Thanks ...

Fairly typical Rickenbacker 12 to be honest. An absolute joy to listen to, sort of a PITA to play and maintain. LoL! Neck’s too narrow, especially down near the nut. But it definitely does the Ric 12-string sound in spades. It’s great to have that in my tonal toolbox.

But it’s also why I didn’t need a Gretsch that sounds just like that. And I do think the 5422-12 has got its own thing going on, a more "natural" tone. Yeah, when I hook it up to a Jangle Box I'm sure I can push it to go Ric-ish, but on its own, it’s not like that. It's not an imitation Ric. I think I’m going to like that.

btw, Thanks everybody for your various comments and pics - Much appreciated. Always makes NGD even a little more fun than it already is!

@GlenP

Thanks for sharing that, I remember seeing Mr. Campbell playing that in concert when my Grandmother took me to a Symphony concert when I was 10, Glen Campbell was the special guest. Since my Grandmother was a concert violinist, that was the moment she recognized the guitar as a real instrument. That clip brought me back to when I finally felt that maybe my family would support a kid as a potential musician. The irony was that growing up in a family that had several polka bands, the Bass, accordion and banjo took a higher chair on the respect ladder than the guitar, that was until that concert, and my Granmother began to defend me. Thank You!
