What color is the original pickguard on a Monkees model, Mine is more of a silver color.....Where is the GRETSCH label located. Ive looked at several and cannot find the paper tag anywhere. Did the 6123 have a paper tag?thanks for the help !
Many of the Monkees guitars were sold with a regular silver Gretsch guard and black truss rid cover. People often didn't want all the Monkees stuff. There would be no label on that model, the serial number is on the headstock.
Placement of Gretsch SN's has been a bit of a hodge podge throughout the ages. If you can't find it either embossed on the guitar or painted, look inside the control cavities.
As an aside (an odd one, for that matter), I just saw the title of this thread again and for a split second I had this weird vision of little Gretsch born monkeys running wild all over the Gretsch CS, knocking over guitars, playing with knobs and other small objects, throwing things, etc. Sometimes my mind goes to strange places.
Last question. On the Gretsch Monkees model was the serial number embossed into the wood or simply printed on the rear of the headstock? My guitar has been refinished
Back of the headstock. The Monkees model wasn't introduced until after Gretsch had ceased embossing the serial numbers into the top of the headstock in 1966.
