Is my G2622T master volume knob working correctly?

Hi all, first time Gretsch owner and I'm not sure if my brand new G2622T is wired correctly or if I'm misunderstanding the purpose of the Master Volume knob. As per the Gretsch general manual, when I turn the #2 knob (treble side, by neck pickup) all the way down, I was expecting the master volume to go to zero, but it does not. If the volume were on a 1-10 scale, it seems like it dials down only to about a 4. Is this normal behavior or is something not quite right?

I wonder if the Master Volume and Tone pots got switched. What should be the Tone knob seems to do what the Master Volume is supposed to do, and vice versa. But not consistently? Very strange…

Is the guitar new or did a previous owner screw with the wiring?

Obviously it should not work that way and I have no idea how the tone pot could be moved to that location, I would expect the wire to be too short.

There is one quirk in the wiring in that if you turn either pickup volume to zero they both shut off. Weird but that is workable because usually the individual pickup volume pots are only used to balance the sound between the two and aren't turned all the way down.

That's how Gibsons are wired, as well, at least the older ones with a volume and tone for each pickup. Both volumes act as master volumes if you turn them all the way down. In my '62 ES-330, I solved the question of messing with my levels by taking a cue from Gretsch! Using all Gibson OEM parts, I installed a master volume in the lower bout, where the Gretsch M.V. would be, below the pick guard. It looks GREAT and I LOVE it. Use it all the time, as I do with my Gretsches. FWIW, (again, using all OEM parts - it ALL looks like it was done BY the Gibson Custom shop), I also moved the output jack to the side and installed a Standby switch in the former output hole. I put Standbys in ALL my guitars & use them constantly. (They were already in the '62 reissue Gretsches, but admittedly I had to mod THOSE to correct a rather unbelieveable factory grounding/hum issue they both had.) With my live rig, I have at least 3-4 guitars plugged in at once, into a pre-pedals/everything line mixer, & having the standbys lets me shut off guitars I'm not playing without fear of feedback, & w/o having to fix any volume settings when I change guitars. Gretsch had the right idea, but they need to wire them correctly!! IMHO, ALL guitars should have 'em! Cheers!

It could be that you have a ground wire that's come off one of the pots or shorted to one of the other wires. That would make a volume pot act like a tone. And while the master volume is the most likely suspect, it could be somewhere else in the circuit, as it's all interactive.

I hate the electronics in the new Gretsch guitars. I purchased a couple and had problems with both. Ended up with one with P90's on it and it's not any better. I called Gretsch and they seemed to think everything was okay. I own several old Gretsch's and love them. As a finger picker I need a good master volume and seems only the older guitars have that, as well as the zero fret.

This is a brand new guitar… thinking I may need to send it back for a replacement and hope the new one is wired correctly.

Absolutely! Send it back if that is an option. Working on the wiring on any semi or hollowbody is a PITA.

Who did you buy it from? I ask because you can save the shipping costs if you bought from MF by returning it to any GC store. Some don't know that.
