Hit a deer

My aunt lives about 40 miles north of the city and she has hit a few, once in a pink Chevy Blazer. She tries not to drive after dark now, thanksgiving meals are at 2pm.

Here's a pretty song about hitting a deer, or maybe a caribou. The story told on The Pixies Podcast is that on the way to the studio Frank just missed hitting a deer so he imagined what might have happened if he had hit it. He drives a huge yellow Cadillac, so probably not much, but that wouldn't have made a song.

Yep, yesterday morning before the sun came up. The sheriff and I never found the deer. Could t even tell quite where it was hit. But it did a number on my company car. I was down to 40mph so I’m good before anyone asks!

That's a drag. We're loaded with deer out here, and hitting one is always a danger, but we also have wild pigs and hitting one of them is like plowing into a boulder. Deer present themselves so suddenly- it's really hard to avoid them.

Deer are fast and alert, but not that bright. They will sometimes run with the car beside the road before panicking and jumping in front of it (when they could have escaped danger by jumping the other way, or just stopping).

They get especially stupid in Autumn, both because of mating season and because (like humans) it takes a while for adolescent brains to catch up with the adult body.

Every other Autumn on average, a deer hit on the road will die in my field. For the rest of the Winter, the carcass will wander around the field. It’s rare to actually see the coyotes, but I hear them, and I don’t think a spine and rib cage are walking around on their own.

@Bertotti

I am sorry to hear that after all of your hardships.

I am glad that you are ok, ever since the shutdown, I have never seen so many deer in Michigan. I guess the deer took advantage of fewer cars. Cars today are designed to absorb impact, so less "G" forces get put on the driver and passenger. To me, I would rather replace plastic and sheet metal than trying to do the impossible and replace a human life. It is a blessing that you are ok.

This has been an interesting year. But I’ll kick its butt.

@Bertotti Always shocking when that happens. It’s great you’re ok with no injuries.

A 40 mph hit does that to a car?

Well it is a Chevy.

At least it wasn't a moose. Due to their height, they usually land on top of the car, often going thru the windshield. Usually, the car gets totaled.

My wife worked in the office of a factory that had a lot of hunters employed. A tiny lady she worked with was talking to some of the hunters and mentioned that she bagged a deer herself a couple of weeks earlier.
"What did you use? Bow? Shotgun"" they asked her.
"Buick." she replied.

Glad you're OK. Company car is covered by insurance, so you're off the hook, especially since you were likely under the speed limit. Dawn and twilight in fall are bad times for deer and cars.

I’ve heard that about moose and killing people. Until you’ve seen a moose in person, most people don’t realize how tall and big they are. Don’t mess with a moose.

Deer are nuts. My mom hit one, had to get a new fender for the '61 VW. I remember mounting some kind of anti-deer/animal whistles onto the front bumper of a couple of cars. Moose sounds serious. We get the occasional wild pig family although they're smart and stay away from cars.

About 20 years ago I went to a wedding in New Brunswick and was told to mount these on my bumper before I went out there. They call them moose whistles. They fell off my car about 19 years ago and have been in a basket about 5 feet from where I'm sitting ever since.

The Australian equivalent is probably the kangaroo. While it’s rather traumatic to imagine skippy being hit by a car, there are more fragile lumps of granite out there. I hit a roo in a ford a few years back near Inverell that hard it shunted the engine fan 10mm into the engine block. The roo came through the bumper, through the radiator and into the fan hub, wrote off the car, then shook its head and bounced away. Leaving me hoping I had enough cellphone signal to call a tow truck..

The biggest problem it’s you don’t know what they will do. I was well set to miss this big one until he pulled up short. One extra jump and there would have been no contact made. They are like giant squirrels on steroids everyone one of the either suicidal or mentally handicapped!

I used to see those in the JC Whitney catalog (anyone remember them?) and wonder if they actually worked. JCW was acquired by a competitor and just isn't the same.

Uh ... last week, I hit a lady's car with about 1...2 mph (foot slipped from the clutch - immediately slammed brake, but hit her anyway). She claims a new bumper. I doubt that, and will so in further proceedings, as it stinks fraud to me...

Anyway, looks like a decent hit, that... Hm, I've never hit any animal who was still alive, but run over a few dead ones. A very small deer, on the bike ... tought "Straight, over it!", did that, worked, but that was pretty close - eventually, there's no more road.

Glad you didn't get any damages (to you). Any car, any thing, is replacable, and ... well, accidents happen.

Dad had that happen when he had the Lancia. Deer was standing on a hill beside the road, eventually started running, parallel to the car, and all of a sudden turned left and hit the car in the side, despite braking and all ... maybe accelerating woulda worked there, she hit the rear right side ... and sped off, to collaps and die a few meters into the field. He drove to the next village, called police from a gas station or restaurant (pre-cell era) and when he returned to the spot, the forest authority guy already had the corpse in his trunk. "Dinner", he renamed it.

I heard that those didn't really do much, just like ultrasonic insect repellants. Your car whistles as it cuts through the air which is all these do.

I remember JC Whitney well. Their goods ran the gamut from necessities to junk. I sort of miss all of the pulp paper catalogs we used to get from Edmund Scientific gear to the most useless stuff like X-ray glasses.
