Great thread. I read thru the 1st page but thought I'd supply my answer before reading more as I want to see what I list and then read thru some answer to see what I forgot I like!😄 These are just a few as Blues and Folk genres are a whole other arena.

"Hurricane" - Bob Dylan

"The Wish", "Darlington County", "Johnny 99", "Straight Time", "Open All Night", "State Trooper", "Highway Patrolman", "Youngstown", "The Hitter", "American Land", "Black Cowboys", "Seeds", "Promised Land" -- Bruce Springsteen........................ I'm a huge fan and really love the characters he creates to tell stories of the human condition. The listed are just a few!

"Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", "Allentown", "Goodnight Saigon" , "Downeaster Alexa" - Billy Joel

"Cats In The Cradle" - Harry Chapin

"The Boxer" - Simon and Garfunkel

"American Pie" - Don McLean

"One For My Baby(And One More For The Road", "New York, New York" - Sinatra,

"Rain On The Scarecrow", "Small Town", "Key West Intermezzo(I Saw You First)", "Troubled Land", "Don't Need This Body", "Longest Days" - John Mellencamp

"Desperado", "Life In The Fast Lane", "Lyin' Eyes" - Eagles

"Leader Of The Band" - Dan Fogelberg

"Gimme Three Steps" - Lynyrd Skynyrd

"Mary Jane's Last Dance" - Tom Petty

There's just way too many to make a good "top" list for me....but...just a few that immediately came to mind (and in no order of favoritism)

Alice's Restaurant (Arlo Guthrie)
Tweeter and the Monkey Man (Traveling Wilbury's)
Tangled Up in Blue (Bob Dylan)
Isis (Bob Dylan)
Taxi (Harry Chapin)
Cat's in the Cradle (Harry Chapin)
Piano Man, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant and a bunch of other ones by Billy Joel
Angie Baby (Anne Murray)
Punk Rock Girl (The Dead Milkmen)...for something a little lighter...lol

And the other 10,000 that will all suddenly enter my head with "Jeez, why didn't you list XYZ!"

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, The Devil Went Down to Georgia
I guess someone did mention this, I thought the name was Tallahassee Biridge but it's Ode to Billy Joe.

One my sister used to love, Wildfire.
This was on all our K-Tel records, The Year of the Cat.

I thought of The Year of the Cat, then forgot to post it. It is a masterpiece imho.

As there are a lot of the usual suspects in this topic thread, here’s some probably not represented much. Sure wasn’t going to list all the Dylan tunes which fit the bill. Not everyone is necessarily 1st tier favorites, but notable enough to mention.

Welll, I like them…

A Soul to Claim - Doug Macleod
Dubb’s Talking Disappointment Blues - Doug Macleod
Twenty - Robert Cray
Night of the Devil’s Road - Doug Macleod
Frank Delandry Died - Brooks Williams
19 Miles to Baghdad - Lizzie West & White Buffalo
The Cape - Guy Clark
Betsy the Serving Maid - Martin Simpson
Louise - Leo Kottke, Bonnie Raitt
Saginaw Michigan - Leo
Now that the Buffalo’s Gone - Buffy Ste Marie
Louis Collins - John Hurt
Mr Charlie - Lightnin’ Hopkins
John Hardy - K, R & G
Alice’s Restaurant - Arlo & Janis
Biko - Playing for Change, Peter Gabriel
Rocky Raccoon - you know
