You’ll be an EE major at a prestigious university? Don’t worry. The ladies worth your time will find you. As for a guitar, see what you can find used, either an electric with a headphone amp or an acoustic. Setup is everything.

Nothing can stop a determined thief, but a locked case secured to your bed with a bike lock through the handle should discourage opportunists and the inebriated.

I speak from experience. I’m a retired engineer who specialized in laser imaging systems. You’ll love UCSD. I worked on two design projects with scientists there.
Did I mention I play the banjo too? Hehe.
Anyhow, would a used player Tele or something like that do the trick? Get a decent setup on it? I might take my mandolin too, it's small enough that I could hide it, probably. The bike lock method sounds good, I believe Stringray also vouches for it.

Oh yes, you're a BioE, right? I almost did that, until I took E&M and I was like "ok, this is cool, I guess I'm gonna go study witchcraft now". I'm pretty damn excited for UCSD, so I can be in the most gorgeous locale in the States and never go outside to enjoy it.

Squier Telecaster, or similar cheap well set up practically indestructible Tele shaped object.
Amp-laptop, interface, software, and headphones.
If you think you might actually jam with a drummer or form a band, get something cheap but powerful thats decidedly uncool like an old Peavey. Hide it in the corner under your dirty laundry.
Acoustic-def something cheap. The Gin Ricky is a good shout, but any old cheap acoustic will fit the bill as long as it plays decent.
Forget about the leather jacket. More likely to be stolen or ruined than a guitar. You will be fine with jeans, t shirts, a couple of hoodies.
I suppose I'm also in the market for home appliances and cookware, so having a cuttingboard around is probably a good idea.

San Diego is a fun town. Get to Horton Plaza. Major commercial center, and the plaza is quite nice. The whole thing was begun and built by my distant relatives (really distant —- the rich side of the family) 🥴 .There are some good record and music shops. I say don't take any guitar with you, buy one when you get there. Because it’s both a college town and a Navy town the pawn shops will have interesting stock. This can introduce you to the S D music community. But keep in mind it’s a Navy town. That can be both a good and a risky thing. Be careful. Also treat yourself to a trip or two to La Jolla.
You’re heading for a great adventure. I remember from my brief time there (1967-68) that Scripps had some wondrous coeds. :) Congratulations, good luck, and have fun!

I’d take something inexpensive like a streamliner and leave the good stuff at home. If I were thinking about spending that much on a leather jacket, I’d look at Aero Leathers. Yes they’re in Scotland but their selection of vintage pattern jackets (and other stuff) is exceptional in my opinion
I've drooled over their bomber jackets for years!

I need a way to keep my precious six-string (and friends) safe. Do any of you fine folk have any advice on how to keep a guitar safe in a dorm?
@Duo Slinger
OK , all jokes aside now .
This is a " precious guitar " and you want to keep it safe ...... leave it home for the first semester ( you'll thank me later ) You have plenty of time to buy a " cheap beater " off of Facebook Market Place - Craigslist - Guitar Center Used Dept. - and even Garage Sales . If you really think your guitar is going to be safe , then I do wish you the best of luck . Take my advice , leave it home the first semester and see what happens

Hey man, the sax is where it's at! Unless you were playing the tuba, in which case, TELL ME YOUR SECRETS O WISE MASTER!
In those daze, Grasshopper, I had to set aside my woodwinds and learn to play the trombone (I wasn't smart enough to choose a smaller, valved instrument) because the marching band was a brass-only group for my first 2 years, and when we added saxes the director flatly refused to let me march with a bari. 😡

You will do just fine with the fillies as a string player as long as you don't cop to playing banjo until the fifth date. 😂

I just realized you may be too young to get the "Grasshopper" reference. If needed, just web search for some clips of a 1970s TV show called "Kung Fu".

Best of luck to you in your new adventure!

San Diego gets cold in the winter.
That's one of the funniest things I've read in this whole thread.
We get lots of below zero F here, (lake effect, cold and wet) and there are others in the Northern states that see far worse. Cold in Southern California? Seriously?
I'll happily put up with cold & wet as long as we don't get wildfires or hurricanes.

Regarding my above post / video
This 145 year old / 1870s antique Martin was loaned for the filming of the movie " The Hateful Eight " . Kurt Russell was suppose to smash a prop , but the guitar was never switched . Notice Jennifer Jason Leigh's actual reaction .
Oh , Martin doesn't loan guitars out anymore
Hey accidents happen ....even in College @Duo Slinger
