Calling out the White Falcon experts

Hello fellow Gretchers,

I might be trading my players edition midnight sapphire Falcon for a 2013 G6136DS White Falcon in polyurethane finish. I used to own a G6136T-LDS in laquer finish vintage white.

When I bought the players edition Falcon I was initially going for the white one and not the midnight sapphire. The white guitar was just too bright looking to my taste. Pure white I thing they call it. Now, looking at some pictures the 2013 G6136DS (it’s 2 hours drive from me) would you say that it’s the same white as the players edition? It sure won’t age as a laquer finished guitar but is it as bright white as the players edition?

Hi. I cant answer the question about the brightness, but i am curious about the midnite sapphire. Other than the color, are there other reasons you would give it up? I played the white version and liked it, but preferred the darker color, then money ran out. But it’s still on the short list.

I’d say that the main reason would be the Dynasonic pickups that I miss. I have other Gretsch guitars with Filtertron. But really nothing wrong with the players edition. If anything it’s a joy to play and the FT-67 pickups are actually outstanding. I bit surprised that no one is talking about them!

I talked a bit about them when i was looking around. For some reason people didnt care for the players edition features, which i actually thought was an upgrade. I was also looking at the dyna version. Both are sharp looking guitars.

Can't comment on the DS but my 2014 FT Falcon is very white, very noticeable compared to my 2009 white penguin, but being a Dyna spec one maybe it's more of a vintage white?

Here is a very bad pic to compare the two.

Beautiful collection and great picture.
I could be wrong but I would say that the newer Players Edition White Falcon has a brighter white than your FT Falcon. Yours might be somewhere between a PE and the vintage white. Thanks for sharing this

Thanks Coby, the black penguin was sold off to cover the white Falcon, can't have them all lol.

Possibly but it could also be faded over time as well, here is a better pic of the Falcon if it helps seeing as it's around the same year you are looking at.

I’m there with you! Sometimes it just as to be the one in one out rule!

Looks pretty close if not the same white colour as the 2013 G6136DS that I’m looking. Being from around the same year is reassuring in a way. Looks good, Stefan. I’d say pure white but definitely not as bright as those Players Edition. It’s kinda what I wanted to validate, thanks Stefan

Being white I'm sure there would be some sort of yellowing seeing as it's 10 years old, so yeah I agree that it shouldn't be as crisp white as a new one.

If you decide to go for the swap I hope it works out for you.

I recently had the opportunity to try a 6122 PE with the FT-67's. Played and sounded great. That model would be worth considering for anyone looking for a hollow-body and good upper fret access.

I'm not really adding a lot to the purpose of this discussion but I'd like to tell you that I had a Stephen Stills WF that I bought new and I swapped it for a Player Edition WF because I couldn't live with Stills' signature on the fretboard (even though the sig is fairly subtle). I love my PE and it's so easy to play but I now wish that I'd never made the change. The PE is fantastic and the build quality from Japan is amazing but loses some of the Gretsch mojo/magic dust.

Edit: I also miss the Vintage White of the Stills. I hated it when I first saw it but now I'm in love with the colour/shade.

Ah I once came close to buy a Stills Falcon but decided that the signature would probably bother me. Now I think I’d get over the sig in a heartbeat. They’re really cool looking without the pick guard.

I absolutely love my players edition Falcon. Top notch build, build for the road and the studio, pickups might just be the best Filtertron I’ve heard no kidding. But I just miss my old White Falcon.

The "very white" poly finish on my rehearsal-room-mate`s Falcon looks strangly cheap. I would prefer a more faded colour.
I`ve seen some more off-white ones that are poly, too. But I don`t recall the model and the year. But they are out there.

The feeling I had when I saw a white falcon players edition in person

In all honesty the new player series prolines I have tried, including one of the copper falcons, seem to have had a different feel to my 2005-2014 pro lines, not sure if it's maybe the poly is that tiny bit thicker or maybe it's applied different but I dunno, maybe it's in my head too (most probably lol).

My 2008 Tennessee Rose and my 2021 Falcon are both polly finished but they feel very different. As if my TR feel like laquer compare to the Falcon..
