That one is a bit hard, I have done it before but met the guy in person first, he was interstate and was here on business, after that we just did it on our word, he sent his guitar up in a case and I sent mine back.

Smaller items, my way of doing it would be buy the pedal off him or he buy the pedal off you, some one sends it, then you vice a versa, it's a bit more messing around but at least that way if the person decides to keep his pedal then at least you have the money??? just my opinion.

Maybe set the threshold that makes you comfortable. No below 500 posts count and/or has had an active presence in the last 2 years. If neither, be prepared to walk.

Personally, I think post counts mean very little. If someone has some online presence AND conducts themselves decently/honorably, sure, that helps. I’ve known of some real jerks on other forums with sky-high post counts ….

Also, while I can’t afford to get scammed often, nothing I buy or sell is putting the mortgage payment on the line. I choose to accept a little risk and trust a little (barring red flags) rather than tying myself in knots trying to avoid all risk. It’s a quality of life choice.

Granted, the degree of caution does depend on the number of zeros in the price.

Those jerks could be a relatively safe bet. They’ve found a podium for their antics, and an audience that will tolerate them. 😁

Agreed that most folks on here are pretty trustworthy. That said, other forums have had problems with accounts getting hacked and then using those for fake sales or trades, so it can be a good idea to check recent posts.

I’d definitely exchange phone numbers just in case things go awry, and avoid shipping to “oddball” addresses (my cousin’s business, etc,)

Personally, I’ve traded pedals a few times, but I would never ship trade a guitar or amp.

I've traded many things. My rule is the higher the value, the more personal interchange with the trading partner. It may be a text and email age, but get on the phone and talk to each other. Facetime with them and you can each show the items in more detail. I've met some great people over distance talking music and gear and trading with them.
