Well, since I got my Dust Devil from Winfield and absolutely sound horrible, not the amp me, the amp was very good. I had my fingers in knots, terrible picking dynamics, bar chords kicked my butt, mya cues y was absolutely gone, and I forgot everything even Tue simple set riffs. It was like O was ten again with my first plastic guitar my parent bought at the dome store. Neck shaped like a bow plastic strings and a mile high action and a new kid banging away on it sounding as bad as a beginner bowing a violin for the first time. Yep that was my day.
So how am I going no bed? Pulled out my little Martin. This little Sitka tipped beast was still in tune and a I haven’t played it in a year! Makes me consider a larger model of this very stable composite. I digress.

little Martin and two books that have helped me on the past and a New one I have had for a several years now that @Synchro keeps telling me to dig into. I will get better!

Ok, I started reading into the Johnny Smith Method, only a few pages in but he seems to take a piano approach to reading music. I knew several guitar teachers who have told me piano was a great way to start to learn music because of how it is laid out in front of you. Did JS also play piano or start on it earlier in life I wonder?

On page 7 the first sentence is what makes
me wonder if he was exclusively a guitar player.

“One of the contributing factors in the misnaming, misuse and misunderstanding of chords has been the misconception that the guitar is strictly a treble clef instrument.”

I have no idea how the bass clef works but I’m wandering off now to see.

Music for viola is written in the alto clef where middle C is found on the middle line of the staff. This clef would work equally well for guitar. The reason for writing notes for guitar an octave higher in the treble clef is that so few people were familiar with the alto clef and many people centuries ago learned to read music learning to play piano.

Ok Grabbed the Penguin Palour to just try and remember a bit I wrote years ago. So with an acoustic it comes back to me, and apparently Penguins like tequila!
It’s funny how I’m so much more comfortable with an acoustic than an electric. Most of these have deeper necks I need to pull out the Broadway Jade and see how my hand likes it.

I have always thought of selling the Parlor Penguin but it sounds better than I remember it. So, it means it stays here with me. It sits nicely between my Little Martin, which is a very nice example of the LM Martins, and the 000-18GE. It doesn’t compare to the 000 of course but at 15% the cost it wouldn’t. I Wouldn’t buy it over the Little Martin I have, it sounded good when I got it but over the years it has really developed. I think this Penguin Parlor will as well the build is heavier and the finish is heavy but that should break in a lot more of I give it some love. The Penguin being closer to a Taylor tone but not Taylor than a Martin and I am decidedly a Martin tone person.

Anywho I digress today was a much better day but still like being completely new.

The bass and treble clef approach of the Smith book are very helpful in the long run. It took some adaptation, but it was worth it.
